Binaural sound uses slightly different audio frequencies in each ear to create a perceived third tone in the brain — a phenomenon called auditory beat stimulation. When your left ear hears 200Hz and your right ear hears 210Hz, your brain perceives a beat at 10Hz. Depending on the target frequency, this can encourage states associated with calm, focus, or deep sleep. Combined with controlled breathing, the effect is significantly deeper than sound or breathwork alone.
Headphones are strongly recommended — they're what makes the binaural layer work. The effect requires stereo separation between your left and right ears, which speakers can't reliably deliver. Without headphones, you'll still get a well-guided breathing session and the full environmental soundscape, but the binaural frequency layer won't reach its full potential. Any pair of headphones or earphones will work; you don't need anything expensive.
Binaural Breathing isn't a meditation app. There are no guided mindfulness sessions, body scans, or sleep stories. It's a breathing tool built around a specific outcome: shifting your emotional state in minutes. The binaural audio layer and immersive sound environments are purpose-built for breathwork — not adapted from a general wellness platform. The free plan includes 15 sessions, 2 sound environments, progress tracking and streak building — more than enough to feel a real difference. Premium (€8.99/month or €59/year) unlocks unlimited sessions, all 5+ environments, all four Irish voice options, offline mode, long-form sessions of 20 minutes and beyond, advanced breathing techniques, and early access to new content as it's released.
None at all. The animated breathing guide does everything — you just follow the orb as it expands and contracts. Most people are in their first session within 90 seconds of opening the app. Sessions are designed to work from the very first attempt, not after weeks of practice.
Free sessions run 2, 5 and 10 minutes. The 2-minute reset was built for moments when you genuinely don't have time for anything longer — a few minutes between meetings, before a difficult conversation, or the moment you sit down at your desk. Premium adds sessions of 15, 20 minutes and beyond for deeper, longer practice.
All sessions are narrated in a neutral Dublin/East Coast Irish accent — warm, calm and unhurried. Think calm radio presenter, not a meditation guru. We recorded four voices (Aoife, Conor, Niamh and Seán) so you can choose the one that feels right for you. It's a deliberate creative choice: the Irish voice is distinctive without being distracting, and sits naturally in the mix with the binaural layer beneath it.
